Back in 2017, I created an initiative inspired by my experiences as a teacher in a supportive school with forward-thinking administrators who encouraged my growth by sending me to professional development opportunities across the country. The more I traveled and presented, the more I connected with educators for whom professional development was a rare privilege. I met teachers who were attending a conference simply because it was “their turn” (someone else had gone last year), and others who had paid their own way—covering costs themselves, including substitute teachers—for what they described as a “once in a career” opportunity to attend a major event. That didn’t sit right with me. So, I began designing and selling merchandise, with 100% of the profits going toward helping teachers attend the SHAPE America National Convention. The #sendateacher initiative inspired similar efforts in several states across the country. Now, in its latest iteration, the #sendateacher legacy is continued by SHAPE America.
Once again SHAPE America are running their annual “ Send a Teacher ” fundraising initiative in June! This campaign is dedicated to raising funds to send preK-12 health and physical education teachers to the 2026 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Kansas City.
The “ Health & PE for Every Body ” apparel emphasizes the vital role of health and physical education in educating all children, while also promoting belonging and community.
