Navigating Education in 2025 – #slowchathealth

I can’t imagine what it must be like. To be a teacher in a school in 2025. As I watch the news each day I am beyond puzzled about the decisions, orders and mandates that are unfolding in our government on a regular basis. Never have we had to be so vigilant when it comes to protecting and supporting our school-aged children, our education funding and our very way of life as teachers. How do we cope? How do we advocate? How do we remain optimistic about the future?

I am writing this microblog to remind you not to lose hope. No matter what happens, there is still no better comfort for a child than a loving, caring adult in the classroom. They are innocent. They are voiceless. They are the ones who rely on us to communicate that they are loved in all the ways we know how to give it to them.

From my lens, teachers are one of the most powerful forces in the life of a child. That power must be taken seriously and used carefully. We are highly trained professionals that know more than anyone else about the intricacies of our chosen field of study. We relay information, teach skills, build confidence and reassure children that everything is going to be okay. We reinforce that kindness still matters, even when they see others being unkind. We support and praise our students for doing the right thing when it comes to treating everyone with respect and dignity, even though society may be sending a different message.

You need to hear that your contributions matter. I know it’s easy to go directly to the bad times; to the times when colleagues or parents or administrators block the path or make it harder. Please know that those moments don’t define you or your work. Your students do. They are the reasons why we are passionate about our chosen career. There is more going right than is going wrong and we must practice seeing the sunshine through the clouds. I am so grateful to teachers for the work they are doing in the classroom in these uncertain times. I am so thankful for the love you pour out each day. Now, more than ever, our children need you.
