Synopsis: Seattle tv character Lanie (Angelina Jolie) has the right life: engaged to main league baseball participant Cal (Christian Kane), residing in an attractive house, and up for a promotion to a nationwide community position in New York. She has a spiky relationship with colleague and cameraman Pete (Edward Burns). However when self-proclaimed road prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub) predicts she’s going to die the next Thursday, and his different predictions (a soccer rating, a hailstorm, and an earthquake) begin coming true, Lanie has to re-assess her priorities.
What Works Nicely: The manufacturing is glitzy and the pacing brisk, permitting Angelina Jolie to throw herself into the position of a girl manicuring each element of her existence: the coiffure, the make-up, the garments, the angle, the lover, and the camera-ready expressions are all geared for larger success. The hollowness inside begins to emerge after Jack’s prophecy, and Lanie’s dialog with boyfriend Cal is a surprising revelation of superficiality. The cracks within the veneer creep longer and deeper because the fateful day approaches.
What Does Not Work As Nicely: The plot is trapped between normal rom-com fare as Lanie and Pete transition from adversaries to lovers, and extra profound meaning-of-life intentions. By not committing to both, the emotional vitality stays suspended on a yellow mild. By means of Pete’s repeated and tiresome criticisms of Lanie’s decisions, the script firmly locations its weight behind conventional abandon-the-dream conservatism.
Key Quote:
Cal: Is that this you breaking apart with me? Nicely will you concentrate on it for a minute?
Lanie: A minute simply looks like a very very long time to waste.
