What Works Nicely: That is an engaging-enough hybrid comedy-drama-romance about household secrets and techniques, fitting-in, versatile definitions of affection, the enduring across-the-years bond between mom and daughter, and gray zones between truth and fiction. Jennifer Aniston capably carries the load as Sarah is caught in an emotional storm of inside doubt, and he or she is surrounded by a high quality solid with Shirley MacLaine a selected delight. Director Rob Reiner delivers a refined look and brisk pacing.
What Does Not Work As Nicely: The chemistry-free romance that develops between Sarah and Beau, after she suspects he could also be her father, can solely be described as icky and made worse by her betrayal of fiancé Jeff. The script incessantly lacks zing, exemplified by reaching for an undeserved blissful ending whereas ignoring the bittersweet “now what” uncertainty of The Graduate‘s decision.
